Rosh Hashana morning

Join Kehilat Kolenu for a special Rosh Hashana 5780!

Kolenu has endeavoured to bring you a meaningful, spiritual and musical service, combining humanistic values with a deep cultural understanding of Jewish heritage and tradition. We combine traditional liturgy with modern Hebrew poetry and original compositions to bring you a Machzor that is both rooted and contemporary, inclusive and personal. Our Kehila is dynamic and egalitarian, and we hope you will find a place here to connect with the Jewish people, its past and its future.

Our Rosh Hashana morning service is based upon the three quintessential Mussaf prayers: Malchuyot, Zichronot and Shofarot. In between thoughtful readings and time for reflection, we will facilitating some beautiful Hebrew singing.

As with last year, we have a capped capacity of 650 for each of our Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur morning services. This is to ensure both the safety and enjoyment of all those present. In consultation with community members, we have decided that this year an online ticketing platform is the most equitable way to distribute attendance across these 650 places. A ticket will be required to attend each service.

Head here for Rosh Hashana tickets.

If you have any questions regarding tickets please email events@kolenu.com.au.

At the conclusion of the service you are invited to stay around and enjoy some delicious honey cakes, food and drink.

As in previous years, there will be a concurrent children's service available.

This event is being held on the land of the Bunwurrung people of the Kulin nations whose sovereignty has never been ceded. We pay our respect to Elders past, present and emerging

D'var Torah workshop

D'var Torah workshop

Join us for on Shabbat morning for coffee, cake and learning.

Kehilat Kolenu will be facilitating a Dvar Torah workshop for members of the kehila to learn how to craft a personal, meaningful Dvar Torah. Participants will engage with a Dvar Torah toolkit to break down, dissect and analyse parshiot (Torah portions).

A Dvar Torah means 'a word of the Torah', and is a lesson or sermon on the weekly Torah portion. A Dvar Torah can be given by anyone. Preparing and presenting a Dvar Torah doesn’t necessarily demand vast Jewish knowledge or extensive rhetorical skills. It requires only a willingness to explore a text and to share your exploration with others.

This is an incredible opportunity to meet with fellow congregants, exchange ideas, and be a central participant in weekly Shabbatot.

Register now (https://events.humanitix.com.au/dvar-torah-workshop-with-kehilat-kolenu) as places are limited! Address to be provided upon RSVP.

Tikkun Leil Shavuot

The first night of Shavuot is one of the most exciting nights on the Melbourne Jewish calendar, with educational talks, lemidot and interesting discussions planned throughout our community - so get your night started with Kehilat Kolenu.

Please RSVP at the link below to indicate your attendance and to receive the address for the event.

https://events.humanitix.com.au/kolenu-s-tikkun-leil

The event will include a special Q&A session with John Safran, a well known radio personality, satirist, documentary maker and author. We'll be talking to John about the role of his Jewish identity within his work and his perspectives on extremism in Australia that he discussed in his 2017 book "Depends What You Mean By Extremist". There will also be an opportunity for you to ask John questions and we're certain that plenty of laughs will be included.

We will also be facilitating discussions around central themes in Megillat Ruth, the traditional text read during Shavuot that centres around Ruth's journey to joining the Jewish people and deals with themes of identity, gender and social inequality.

As it is Shavuot, dairy (and vegan) treats will be provided. We look forward to seeing you there!
