Kolenu's Vegan Shavuot

Dear Kolenu congregants and friends, we take pleasure in inviting you to the inaugural 2017 Vegan Shavuot evening!

What will we be doing?
Eating! We want to celebrate Shavuot together a few days before it comes around by gorging on a delicious, cruelty-free, three-course meal! A team of experienced cooks will be putting together a scumptuous assortment of baked and other vegan cheese-related goods. Think mac and cheese, cheesecake, blintzes, queso dip, pizza scrolls, lasagne and more!

Why do we eat milky/cheesy things on shavuot?
Shavuot is the holiday in which Jewish people celebrate receiving the Torah at Mount Sinai. Many explanations are given for cheese-eating: one of them is that the Torah is likened to milk, as in this verse: "Like honey and milk [the Torah] lies under your tongue" (Song of Songs 4:11). Just as milk has the ability to sustain the body of a human being, the Torah similarly provides us with 'spiritual nourishment'.

Why a vegan shavuot?
As a congregation that values critical thinking, TIkkun Olam and loving our neighbours as ourself, it is incumbent upon us to consider both the welfare of our animal neighours and the future of our Earth when making culinary choices.

While the main focus of this event is to eat cheesy foods in anticipation of Shavuot, we hope that this can also present an opportunity for all of us to reflect on our consumption habits, in our collective endeavour to make the world a better place.
